A Magical Deer

A Magical Deer is a documenting animation that I have made to memorise my experience while I was building a replacement head in a 4-day stop-motion puppet workshop with Marika Najil. The project was inspired by Archaeology at El Perú-Waka’: A Maya Ritual Resurrection Scene in Broader Perspective (Archaeology at El Perú-Waka’: A Maya Ritual Resurrection Scene in Broader Perspective | Unframed, 2022).

A magical deer, an animal spirit companion accompanies a deceased king as a guide through the underworld to the king’s resurrection in the ancient Maya time. The magical deer wears an oval pendant representing breath, wind and life. I revived an about 2000-year-old magical deer’s head based on the step-by-step stop-motion puppet-making instruction given during the workshop. While I was recreating the making process of the puppet head via the drawing animation I felt like I was making a ritual bringing the magical deer back from the underworld, from the deceased king to the present time.

It was really a pleasant time learning with Marika Najil. Thanks again for the nice experience and your professional approach to teaching.
